Air fresheners only cover a smell for a few days. To actually remove an odour you have to find and clean its source. Most car smells come down to trapped moisture, dirty fabric, or a clogged cabin filter.
Find the source first
A musty, mildew smell usually means moisture, often from a wet carpet, a leaking seal, or a clogged air conditioning drain. A sour smell can be spilled drinks soaked into the seats. Sniff around the footwells and under the seats to locate it.
Clean the fabric and carpets
Vacuum thoroughly, then use an upholstery cleaner on seats and carpets. For deep smells, a fabric safe enzyme cleaner breaks down the organic matter causing the odour. Let everything dry fully with the windows open so you do not trap more moisture.
Change the cabin air filter
A dirty cabin filter holds dust and mildew and pushes that smell through the vents every time the fan runs. Replacing it is cheap and often makes an instant difference.
Deodorise the vents
Run the air conditioning on recirculate with a vent cleaner or a bowl of odour absorber in the cabin overnight. This clears smells living in the ducts.
